I’ve been thinking a lot recently about how people come to God. Through various interactions and what I believe to be God’s guidance I think I’m getting closer and closer to understanding this kind of weird idea. There have been a few things that God has made clear to me:

• People do not come to the Father except through the Son. (John 14:6)
• I can do nothing to bring anyone closer to God.
• Trying to prove what you believe does nothing to bring someone closer to God.

Really I think these are all just saying the same thing, the first thing, what is said in John 14:6. All of my life I’ve heard Christians trying to come up with fool proof arguments to convince that stubborn atheist that God must exist or that Jew that Jesus was truly the Son of God and the savior they are waiting for. But what can an argument do? A person doesn’t come to know God through an argument, only through Christ.

What can I do that will draw someone closer to Jesus? Well, by example! That’s what we’ve been taught. A life that is a living sacrifice will bear fruit. But the reality is that it is Jesus working through me that bears the fruit. “No one can come to the father but through me.”

I recently talked with a Mormon about his faith. I was just curious about Mormonism and everything it entails. But the more things I heard that hinted at being against the Bible and what I believe God has taught the more I became argumentative, trying to prove Mormonism wrong. After our second meeting he ended it with saying that the reason he believes in God and Mormonism is because he knows deep down (from God) that what he believes is right. At first I was thinking cynical thoughts about this testament. But then God calmed me and made it clear that this is not how he works. He doesn’t work through argument. It’s through Jesus that people come to God. Not just initially but continually. It is through him that everything is done.
